Open Day Report, Saturday 20th May

Six Councillors and the Clerk along with associated family member volunteers (THANK YOU!) welcomed almost 40 residents to their annual open day on Saturday 20th May 2023. The excellent weather was on our side and lots of great conversations were had with faces familiar and new!

We have to thank our exhibitors; SCARD – Support & Care after Road Death & Injury / Campaign Against Drink Driving, Sharlston Against Litter, Sharlston Community Centre Management Committee, Sharlston Food Bank, Sharlston Gardening & Ecology Group, Wakefield District Councillors, Featherstone Town Councillors and West Yorkshire Police for spending time sharing valuable information and speaking with residents about a number of important topics. Information from these and Wakefield Library Services will be shared through our usual channels for those of you not able to attend.

We were able to demonstrate our new speed monitor – Sharlston SID who monitored traffic outside the Community Centre during the morning. We also had a couple of volunteers interested in helping us get out and about with SID in the village and some great suggestions of where this is needed most!

We had a number of conversations with residents about our plans to purchase the land between Weeland Road and Clifton Road including questions raised about the future of the garages on the land and access to the surgery. We advised that we are working closely with Wakefield Council to manage these issues and that full updates will be shared via our website. We also reminded residents of the public consultation open until mid June.

The display to commemorate the 30th Anniversary of the closure of Sharlston Colliery drew many of you to stop and read/look at the resources. Thank you so much to Christine Shepherd for taking the time to put this together and for coming along to share her knowledge with those present.

The plants donated by Sharlston Gardening & Ecology Group proved very popular and the knowledge and expertise shared on the day with budding green fingered residents was much appreciated!

And we were so pleased to have a visit from West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue’s Normanton Blue Watch who brought their engine along for visitors to see and took the time to speak to councillors and residents about concerns including the summer wild fires.

We had a number of issues raised on the day which we are following up including pot holes, speeding, anti-social behaviour, litter, community events and the use of the community centre.
