Brickyard Footpath to Fernside

Members of the public are always welcome to attend our parish council meetings, we encourage public participation, if they have concerns or wish to make representations and give evidence of a problem they have encountered, we are there to help.

One such problem regarding an issue relating to horse riding down the footpath between an area known locally as Brickyard Lane leading onto Fernside.

The clerk has collected information about bylaws on footpaths with a view to the Parish Council or Wakefield Council erecting signage to prohibit horse riding down this particular footpath.

An update from Wakefield Council states they would not take any responsibility for providing signage prohibiting horse riding.

The clerk was asked to explore what powers the Parish Council have in providing  signage prohibiting horse riding. Advice about this situation was provided by Yorkshire Local Councils Associations (YLCA), “any signage put up on the footpath could only be that which makes a request of users or sets out expected behaviour as the council will have no power of enforcement”.
