Survey: Land Consultation & Community Centre

Sharlston Parish Council owns two pieces of land in the village which could be home to various projects. We would like to hear which ideas you like (or don’t!) and suggest others.

Background: until 2018, the Parish Council held a lease on the Community Centre next to St. Luke’s Church. We paid no rent to the Diocese of Wakefield, but were fully responsible for maintaining and improving the building. We have been asking to renew the lease on the same terms, but 7 years on we still have no security at the Community Centre, and without a legal interest in the building, it is almost impossible to get grants to make improvements.

The land between Clifton Road and Weeland Road (the Old Library site) was to be sold by Wakefield District Council and offered to the Parish Council at what we considered to be a very reasonable price. This could be home to a new Community Centre, and there are various grants we could apply for to achieve this. The purchase of the land required a loan (with interest) which we are repaying over 10 years. If the land isn’t used for a community centre or other community facilities, we are confident that we could sell the land and fully repay the loan and interest.

The land on the Heathers (on the left, adjacent to the Sports and Social Club car park and play area) was transferred to the Parish Council by Taylor Wimpey. It’s roughly the size of a Badminton Court, and could be home to smaller community projects.

Please let us have your thoughts on some of the proposals we’ve been given for use of the land, or suggest your own ideas by 20th May.
